Researchers led by Associate Professor Therese O'Sullivan followed 638 young adults, all around 22 years old, through the long-running Raine Study in Western Australia. They tracked blood pressure, waist circumference, blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides — the five markers doctors use to flag "cardiometabolic risk," the kind of early warning signs that quietly build toward heart disease and type 2 diabetes years before anyone feels sick. Nearly one in five of these twenty-somethings — 120 out of 638 — already had two or more of those risk factors. In their twenties.

Then the researchers looked at what people actually ate. For every extra 75 grams of legumes a day (roughly half a cup, cooked), men's odds of landing in the higher-risk group dropped by 72.2%. For women, the same-sized daily serving of cruciferous vegetables dropped their odds by 84.9%. Co-author Neal McNamara put it plainly: "We saw very clear sex-based differences. Beans for blokes and broccoli for women stood out as the real winners."

So why would the same vegetables affect women and men so differently? O'Sullivan's working theory comes down to hormones. "Natural compounds found in legumes may affect testosterone more strongly, while compounds found in cruciferous vegetables may have a greater effect on female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone," she explained. Cruciferous vegetables contain compounds that interact directly with how the body processes estrogen, which may be part of why they showed up as such a strong signal specifically in women. She's careful to note this is an observational study, not proof of cause and effect. But the pattern held up clearly enough to be worth paying attention to.

Heart disease still gets talked about like a problem for your 60s. It isn't. The risk factors that decide how your heart and metabolism hold up decades from now are quietly forming right now, in your 20s and 30s, and small, consistent diet changes really do lower that long-term risk.
